I had already sort of decided that embassy work isn't really my thing, being a diplomat is all about politics... the wrong kind. This week finalised my decision.
This week I had 3 dinners at the embassy.
1. Tuesday, first I played receptionist for a seminar where they talked rubbish (literally; it was about PCB waste treatment). After almost dying of boredom from waiting around doing nothing for 1,5 hrs we went up to Gerard's place for drinks and dinner. I was already exhausted and then having people be extremely rude to me the moment they find out I'm an intern (I try to hide this fact but it always comes out) just pissed me off.
2. Wednesday: Cleveringa lecture @ ambassador's residence. This was actually fun; first time at the residence, very fun/interesting lecture by Professor Forrer from Leiden (the whole evening was for people from Leiden), Professor Boot was there and 5 Japanese former exchange students: Masa, Yoshiko, Hiroko, Akio and Chie. It had been a while since I'd seen them, so that was great fun! Yoshiko apparently saw me in Shibuya a while ago - no idea how she recognised me, not even knowing I was in Tokyo haha. Maybe I'll get to see them again before I go! And the food was SOOO fancy. I have no idea what it was. Seriously, that's how fancy.
3. Friday: oh yay I'm receptionist again, welcoming people to the ambassador's residence, a whole bunch of Dutch and Japanese men. Again, indistinguishable food in funny shapes and jellies and even ruder men than tuesday night. One of them gave me some advice before dumping me but I'd rather have a conversation thank you. I realllly tried but I have but one thing to say: they were assholes. Except for this short american guy who thought I was moving to Singapore. He was nice.
So why will J never be a diplomat? The food! I hate the food! It's so ridiculously fancy! Which in turn makes it really uninteresting. It's all about how good it looks bla bla but it sure doesn't make it taste any better. Green tasteless jelly isn't chique, it's ridiculous. So what if you plonk a prawn on top, it makes no difference!
Seriously.

"Beam them up Scotty!"
That's my girl!
I experienced the same shit.
People that stopped talking to me as soon as they saw my name tag with 'intern' on it.
And way too fancy food (what a waste of money)
Good to hear you're hating it too
it totally sucks they mistreated you as interns.. golly. one day you'll have interns at your work and now you'll be extra nice to them since you know how much it sucks! that or you'll make fun of them ever moar :D
