Spring Vacation part 2: Fukuoka

福岡

Luuk arrived on Sunday evening and Friday we left for Fukuoka. Fukuoka was a welcome change, seeing as my single dorm bed is not really spacious enough for two. I was really looking for to the comfortable ride in the Kamome, a rather luxurious fast train to Fukuoka. I was greatly disappointed when I found out the one we happened to be taking was an older version and rather a lot less spectacular. So much for boasting about the wonderful train. Luckily Fukuoka isn’t far. We stayed in the same hostel I had stayed in when arriving in Japan in September, so we managed to find it easy enough. In Fukuoka we did a tour of Ouhori park, saw our first cherry blossom in this Japanese garden, went downtown to see shrines (including seeing the largest wooden Buddha of Japan), go to a big shopping mall called Canal City (it’s HUGE!) and frequented a local izakaya which was quite a leap into the unknown with not a trace of an English menu.

Day two in Fukuoka we met up with Gerrie and Jettie to go see a taiko performance. The group Gerrie and I belong to, Rakkou, was supposed to perform, but somehow that didn’t quite happen. Never found out why. They participated in the big ensembles however, and the whole thing was really fun! Quite impressive too, lots of little kids participating, who were all really good! After a quick meal at the station with Gerrie and Jettie it was time for Luuk and myself to get moving again. Time for Luuk’s first shinkansen ride, to Hiroshima! Woo!
